Snoring sounds result from any of several causes, but what they have in common is that the tissue in the back of the sleeper’s throat collapses onto the soft palate. This closes off the airway. As the sleeper breathes, this area opens and closes—with a noisy result.
Causes
Snoring can be caused by, or made worse by, several things, such as:
- Alcohol consumption before bed
- Sleeping aids (sedatives)
- Being overweight
- Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a particularly worrisome issue, although just become someone snores doesn’t mean they have it. There are several types of sleep apnea. The most common, by far, is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). With OSA the air passage not only narrows; you actually stop breathing.
These pauses can last for up to a minute and occur repeatedly through the night. What makes it so serious is that the brain is deprived of oxygen. A number of serious health issues are associated with it, from heart attacks to diabetes.
Treatment
A common treatment for snoring and sleep apnea is an oral appliance, which resembles an athlete’s mouthguard. The appliance holds the jaw in a forward position. This makes extra room for your airway.
