Millions of Americans cope with dental anxiety and phobia. In some people it gets so severe they avoid the dentist until they have some sort of issue where the pain outweighs their fears. As we know at Premier Dental & Oral Health Group in Lake Ozark, even in those cases, such patients only get through necessary procedures with the help of sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry comes in several forms. The purpose is to relax the patient, to relieve any tension they have when they come to the dentist. At Premier Dental & Oral Health Group, we use three levels of sedation dentistry:
- Nitrous Oxide. Better known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide has been a staple of dentistry for more than one hundred years. It works quickly, wears off quickly, and is very effective.
- Oral Conscious Sedation. This involves taking a sedative before the appointment. It puts the patient in a deeply relaxed state, although not to sleep. Patients need a ride home afterward.
- IV Sedation. This is sedation administered intravenously, as the name suggests. Patients will need a ride home after this method, too.
In the most extreme cases, we offer hospital-grade anesthesia. This is not done in our office, but in a hospital.
